My vacuum is really weak....is there anyway I can clean the carpet without the vacuum?

I never have any luck with vacuums...they are always broken, or too lightweight, or seriously too much of a hle to clean, fix ect...i live in a small duplex with dorm style like floors...what is the best way to clean it?
