Why does America avoid looking for the real roots of their biggest problems?

Anything that puts those on the top rungs of society in position where they must change things will not bode well with our well-to-do leaders. Ergo, they resist acknowledging wrongs and fail to move forward. The situation then continues to stagnate and those who can change it remain inert.
