My new cat won't go to the bathroom. its been 2 days?

what would cause my new cat to refuse to void his bowels and blatter? he went to the bathroom in his carrier on the way home from where we rescued him, but now he won't go. is there any thing to entice him into going or is he ill. he is only 6 months old
