Contractions? How do I know?

I'm 12 das away from my due date. I've never had Braxton hicks so I'm not really sure what a contraction will feel like. All I'm feeling is a menstral cramp type cramping going on. Is that dialating?? Or some kind of contraction?? This is my first pregnancy so I'm not sure what to look for.
