Are there 8 or 18 Groups on a Periodic Table?

In the periodic table a "group" is a column of elements. The eight groups that have Roman numeral identifiers have some fairly well defined group behavior. However, the transition elements also have group identities in their columns. For example, Cu, Ag, and Au are considered noble metals.
